UpwardMail Intermittent Issues

Incident Report for eMyPeople

Status: Resolved
This incident has the potential to affect any user of our UpwardMail email platform.

Resolved

Unfortunately the issues with UpwardMail today were an unforeseen consequence of the additional security measures we implemented yesterday afternoon. The changes made yesterday have been reversed and we're finding a way to solve the botnet attacks from a different angle. To the best of our knowledge, all email services on this platform are operating again as they should.

Investigating

Currently we're receiving quite a few reports of UpwardMail users again having difficulty sending emails. While it doesn't look like this is a result of the malicious activity we dealt with yesterday, our team is still investigating the root cause. If an email doesn't send on the first try, we recommend trying again, as it might go through on the second or third attempt. We will get this issue resolved as quickly as possible.

Update

The UpwardMail server has been functioning normally again since yesterday evening. The issue was caused by a botnet hammering the authentication mechanism on the server; we've blocked the attack and implemented additional safeguards to prevent this from happening in the future. We are still monitoring the situation, but all services are running and performing as expected.
